L'encéphalopathie hépatique est une complication de la cirrhose du foie et une caractéristique de l'insuffisance hépatique aiguë, et est également observée chez les patients avec des shunts portosystémiques sans cirrhose. L'encéphalopathie hépatique est caractérisée par des changements de personnalité, une altération intellectuelle, un tremblement de type flapping et une diminution du niveau de conscience. Dans les stades avancés, elle est appelée coma hépatique, qui peut conduire à la mort. Le diagnostic d'encéphalopathie hépatique est établi principalement par la reconnaissance de changements neuropsychiatriques survenant chez un patient atteint de maladie hépatique, après exclusion des maladies cérébrales.
