Hanseníase
CategoryDefinition
A chronic granulomatous infection caused by Mycobacterium leprae. The granulomatous lesions are manifested in the skin, the mucous membranes, and the peripheral nerves. The clinical manifestations are highly dependent on the individual's immune response to infection. Much of the disability from leprosy results from damage to peripheral motor and sensory nerves.
