Definition

Bipolar type I disorder, currently in partial remission, most recent episode manic or hypomanic is diagnosed when the definitional requirements for Bipolar type I disorder have been met and the most recent episode was a manic or hypomanic episode. The full definitional requirements for a manic or hypomanic episode are no longer met but some significant mood symptoms remain. In some cases, residual mood symptoms may be depressive rather than manic or hypomanic, but do not satisfy the definitional requirements for a depressive episode.

Diagnostic Criteria

  • The most recent Mood Episode was a Manic or Hypomanic Episode.
  • The full diagnostic requirements for a Manic or Hypomanic Episode are no longer met, but some significant manic or hypomanic symptoms remain. (Note that in some cases, residual mood symptoms may be of opposite polarity to the symptoms of the most recent episode.)

Note: This category may also be used to designate the re-emergence of subthreshold mood symptoms following an asymptomatic period in a person who has previously met the diagnostic requirements for Bipolar Type I Disorder.
