Interstitial lung disease due to inhalation of silica dust. The accumulation of silica/silicates in lung leads to fibrosis and formation of opacities in upper lobes of lungs on chest X-ray
Diagnostic Criteria
Rounded opacities in upper part of lungs 1/1 ILO rating on chest radiograph, and occupational history of exposure to silica dust (see list of jobs and occupations below)
Dusty jobs in mining quarrying, tunneling, stone masonry, construction, and any process which breaks and crushes or separates solid mineral materials.
Foundries and other metallurgical processes especially cleaning of casting and braking moulds.
Any process using abrasive blasting , particularly with crystalline silica such as removal of paint and rust, cleaning buildings etc.
Exclusions
- with tuberculosis
